A discussion group at the TaxProf Blog (taxprof.typepad.com) has identified their annual Top Ten Tax Stories of 2008, covering a range of tax-related issues. You can read the whole story at their site, but for our purposes we will count them down, Letterman-style:

10. Ordlock v. Commissioner, 533 F. 3d 1136 (9th Cir. July 24, 2008). Community-held assets can be used to pay tax deficiencies - even if one spouse qualifies as an "innocent spouse".

9. Embattled New York Official Raises "Non-Filers Syndrome" as Tax Defense. Charles J. O’Byrne, an aide to New York Governor David Patterson, offered "late-filing syndrome" as one of the reasons he failed to file tax returns from 2001 to 2005. There is, evidently, a syndrome for everything...read more

2. IRS Commissioner Discusses Corporate Taxes

IRS Commissioner Discusses Corporate Taxes with International Tax Conference

The Commissioner of the IRS recently spoke out on a number of issues related to corporate taxation. While his remarks were specific to address international corporate tax challenges, they also serve to provide an insight into the approach and philosophy of the IRS toward corporations and corporate taxes in general. The one thing we‘ve noticed over the last several months is that while it‘s true banks may be hesitant to issue mortgages and want 10 to 20 percent down payment, unsecured lines of credit up to $100,000 are still readily available if you have been in business more than two years and have a good business and personal credit score.

5. Your Business Practices Can Impact Your Loan Qualifications

by Derek Rowley © 2009. All Rights reserved.
Disraeli once said that "there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

In business, some of the "statistics" that can tell such damning lies are the numbers found on company balance sheets and income statements. Too often, the reality is not accurately reflected in the numbers. Accounting is not intended to be a creative art, but in the hands of the right practitioner or aggressive entrepreneur, the accounting numbers can paint almost any type of picture...read more

6. Did you hear the one about Barack and Joe?

Barack Obama discovers a leak under his sink. He finds Joe the Plumber in the Yellow Pages and calls him to come and fix it.

Joe drives to Obama’s house in a very nice neighborhood, where it is clear that all the residents make more money than $250,000 per year.

Joe arrives and takes his tools into the house, where he is shown the room with the leaky pipe under the sink. Figuring its an easy job that will take less than 10 minutes, he tells Obama how much it will cost: $10,000.

“$10,000?” Obama replies, stunned. “But you said it is an easy job...read more
